Remote PC Access isn't taken advantage of by many people simply because not most of us know about it and the ones who do, feel as if it’s far too technical a subject. If you can browse the internet, learning how to control your PC from anywhere will be a cinch.

As you search for the prefect provider of remote PC access software, you will visit numerous sites looking for attributes and other capabilities and there will be terms you may be unfamiliar with. This article is a guide to help you understand what these terms mean.

Remote PC Access. It’s no surprise this is the first term. There are different ideas of what remote PC access is and how it works. Remote PC access is simply a connection formed via the internet to a computer in a remote location. This remote connection allows you to control and manage the host PC(s) from any location. Remote access connections are protected by firewalls and are also referred to as PC control and desktop control.

AES. AES, or Advanced Encryption Standard refers to how secure a remote connection is. Providers with high levels of encryption provide the greatest amount of security. Business users would require more protection than those who only need remote access for personal reasons. When purchasing remote PC access software, pay close attention to the encryption levels. This is important to maximize safety for yourself and your PC.

File Sharing and File Transferring. This is the act of moving files from one PC to the other. Different remote PC access software has different methods of file sharing. The most common methods are “copy and paste” and “drag and drop.” These capabilities vary with each provider.

Host Computer. The host computer is the computer or desktop you would like to view or control. The host computer is also referred to as the remote PC.

IP Address. The IP (Internet Protocol) address is a series of numbers that act as an identifier or stamp of certification in the computer and internet world. All software of this type may not require manual entry of the IP address, but it is definitely of importance.

Local Computer. The local computer is the PC that you are physically seated in front of. It’s the local computer that will require the most attention such as the installation and configuration of software.

Multi-Connection/Multi-Platform. This term is a key feature looked for by remote PC software users. A remote connection with multi-platform capabilities allows its users to establish a connection to a PC running a different operating system than the local PC. Compatible with most operating systems, you can control a computer running Windows from a Mac and vice versa.

Deciding on the correct remote access PC software can sometimes be an overwhelming task. Due to the many technical terms things might not seem as easy as you anticipated. Don’t give up just yet; use this list as a reference whenever you run across those remote access terms you don’t quite understand. Taking the time to learn these terms can save you time and possible headache.
